Bhagat Saab Ji is the grand son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who was the tenth Sikh guru. Bhagat Saab Ji is also known as Baba Deep Singh and is well versed in the history of Sikhism and its writings. When his father died he became an orphan at an early age. He completed his education by appearing for University entrance exams in Lahore, where he got enrolled to study law. He graduated in law in the year 1929 and also completed a master's degree. After completing his master's degree, he was appointed as a lecturer at Gorakhpur University. The story is set at the time of 1940. The Sikh community faces a lot of discriminations and harassment by the British colonial regime. Bhagat Saab Ji is shown to be working as a Lecturer at the Gorakhpur University during this time period. He gets into trouble with British government by refusing to salute the Union Jack flag under cowardly circumstances where he showed his concern for the right cause i.e. Sikh freedom. He had to face death sentence but he did not accept this and stood up for the cause of Punjab's freedom. Bhagat Saab Ji takes active part in armed resistance by raising revolt under the leadership of Nanak Singh Ji, Bhai Budha Ji, Bhai Fateh Singh Ji and others. He went into hiding after being arrested on the suspicion of participating in an armed resistance. He is seen with his fellow prisoners who are also fighting for freedom. Eventually he is released on condition that he will not take part in any further activities in this regard. The Sikhs continue their struggle against the injustice meted out to them by colonial regime. Bhagat Saab Ji gets an opportunity to meet Mahatma Gandhi who is on a visit to Gorakhpur. Bhagat Saab Ji raises his voice against the British rule and asks Mahatma Gandhi for his help in getting freedom for Punjab. He also meets Jawaharlal Nehru much before India becomes independent, who promises him that Pakistan will not be given independence if it is created out of India. Bhagat Saab Ji along with other Sikh fighters take part in the Anhad-Dal movement and also help injured soldiers during World War II under dangerous circumstances. The British government does not agree to fulfill his request. Bhagat Saab Ji faces a lot of financial difficulties during his freedom struggle and writes to Mahatma Gandhi for help. Mahatma Gandhi obliges by agreeing to write a letter to Viceroy Linlithgow for allowing Bhagat Saab Ji to go abroad for medical treatment. He goes on the trip to London and meets with Jawaharlal Nehru along with other Sikhs who are fighting for freedom in India at that time. Bhagat Saab Ji becomes a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, where he has much influence over the younger members of the assembly.
